Hi all – The week has sped by. This is Sat – I think. The weather has been lovely since we arrived. Warm days. Cool cool cool nights. Good thing I brought winter p.j’s & extra blankets. We’re at a small camp in Anvil Lake. Just a step to the beach which is perfect natural sand and very gradual. Perfect for the kids. And such beautiful clear water, all surrounded with trees yet. Lots of animals – eagles, ducks, deer, tame chippies that sit and look at you while you eat. Even Rascal doesn’t perturb them. To top it went out to Eagle River dump to watch the bears one evening. Hard to say which was more fun to watch – people or the bears.

THE SCHMOES. “Sometimes it seems as if we’re dummies to go fishing.”

To Mrs. F. Russell Pope

Hi. Arrived home safely Tues A.M. Drove through. Nearly finished me. Never again. Hated to leave. Could have taken one more week with ease. Last two days were cold and rainy. Had a great time learning how to keep a roaring fire going with damp wood. Succeeded admirably and decided as campers we’d arrived. Came home to cool weather, still no rain. Flowers are all dead, the lawn brown – except for the crab grass. That withstands everything. Why can’t it be prettier? We’ve been entertaining the neighborhood these two days. Knee deep in dirty clothes and kids. Stephen’s shell plaque was waiting. It’s a beauty, admired and envied by all. Did you find that sea cow – or did you buy it? It arrived in beautiful shape by the way. A first rate packing job. Back to work tomorrow. Ugh! Thanks for F. F. [Fannie Farmer] Lollipops made the trip to Wisc bearable. Love, Joycie
